Now in its 5th year\, this family-friendly event is an opportunity for the public to take action in the protection of our G reat Lakes freshwater resource\, to celebrate our waterways\, and to engag e with community organisations working to protect and advocate for the hea lth and well-being of our local ecosystem. At its core remains the communi ty action shoreline cleanup known as PADI AWARE - Dive Against Debris®* t hat sees Kingston participate in an international initiative supporting wa ter conservation efforts and take part in World Ocean Day (June 8th) initi atives. But\, just because ‘dive’ is in the name\, doesn’t mean this event is restricted to volunteer divers. In order to be successful\, we n eed twice as many surface support volunteers on land than divers in the wa ter. Therefore\, the support of non-diver volunteers is critical. Shore su pport volunteers pick up the debris bags from divers and help sort\, weigh and record debris collected. We can also use help to cover more ground if you are at the surface of the water as a swimmer\, kayaker\, canoeist or stand-up paddleboarder. Divers bring debris bags at the surface and you br ing these bags\, attached to a floater\, to the shore.
