Community Service Committee

Meeting Minutes – Feb 19, 2025

In Attendance:  Jennifer Patelli, Elsabe Falkson, Don Polk, Russ Phin.  Guest – Trevor Dagilis

Regrets:  Don Taylor

1) Easter Seals:
• Discussed option of Pancake breakfast at Coco Frutti or Eggsquis.  Jennifer offered to contact Linda (from ES) about this.  Don Taylor informed Jennifer by text that Linda had already looked into this and is awaiting a response.
• Trevor is willing to set up a team for Easter Seals, so Jennifer will ask Don to inform Linda of this.
• Discussed option of having a 50/50 draw at the pub night and donating the proceeds to ES.
2) Cataraqui Conservation Authority:  Elsabe will reach out to them again to determine if there are any projects our club can support.
3) The major donation to Providence Manor’s hospice should be recognized, perhaps with a large Rotary logo on the fence.  WHO IS THE CONTACT PERSON FOR THIS??
4) Science Fair – Takes place March 20/21.  $500 will be donated (sponsor, prizes)
5) Fun Fair – Takes place June 7, 2025  Our club will set up a table and Lake Effect Robotics will be participating from 11-1.  Details will be discussed at a future meeting.
6) BRAINSTORMING re:  Our club’s purpose, community’s needs:  Bryan Paterson (city), Dr. David Pichora (KHSC), Laura Carter (Head librarian), Glenn Vollebregt (CEO of St. Lawrence College) are all potential recipients of a letter asking them how Rotary can provide support.  A draft of this letter was sent to committee members, seeking their feedback.

Meeting adjourned at 6:10 pm.

Next Meeting:  Wednesday, March 19th at 5:15

was discussed.

1 -- Elsabe heard back from the Cataraqui Conservation Authority.  The boardwalk will NOT be rebuilt, but there are other financial needs we could help with.
2 -- If we DO take on a large project, Don suggested payments in installments, ie: four installments of $5K for a $20K project.
3 -- We are still waiting to hear back from Lionhearts about which Wednesday will work best for food packing.  Kelly at Lionhearts is keen to have us, but will not know until November which week is best.   (Lionhearts has been informed that grants are available for bigger requests.)
4 -- A couple of the volunteer opportunities were touched on, including "Roots of Empathy" (brought forward by Elsabe at a previous meeting) and "Brushamania", a dental hygiene project being run by the Cataraqui-Kingston club.
5 -- I have reached out to the Community Service chairs at all the local clubs and have heard back from 2.  I will wait another week, then will arrange a Zoom meeting with those interested in coordinating our activities to maximize impact.
6 -- I will reach out to Anne Desgagnes about advertising the grant application on Facebook.
7 -- I will email Elizabeth Bailey from Kingston 4 Paws about our new grant application system.

Let's plan on having a Community Services meeting on Nov 27th at 5pm, prior to the club assembly.  Unfortunately, none of the other Wednesdays between now and then will work, but if anyone has a pressing need to meet prior to that, please let me know.
