International Service Committee Meeting
Oct. 15, 2024 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Hello members of the Kingston Frontenac International Services committee for 2024 / 25.

Douglas Tanton here, and as your incoming Committee Chair I am pleased to support our group as we consider how to continue our great past work and financially support International projects, and how to focus our efforts as we move forward.

At our Club Board meeting in July we heard from Club executive and incoming treasurer how tight the budgets will be for 2024/25 and how the International Services Committee needs to be active in fundraising for unrestricted funds in the future, as our resources are not tied to bingo funds.

We were advised that our budget allocation for 2024 / 25 will be $9,500.00 CDN, and that there had been cases in the past when small parts of this budget even went towards domestic (Canadian) relief / emergency efforts, although this is a very different funding pool than International projects.

For our budget 2024 / 25 we will allocate $6,000.00 CDN for commitments already underway (listed in attached report), we will push our funding support for Nepal programmes into 2025/26 to allow for background work to be completed this year, and we will hold an allocation of available resources of $3,000.00 for our committee to discuss, prioritize and vote on for 2024 / 25 further programme funding.

In addition, I am recommending we hold a reserve of $500 "if" there could be some emergency need in 2024 / 25. Further, I will also ask our Board / Club formally to consider setting up an emergency "pooled fund" in the future years to be held aside, not part of our Int. Service Committee budget, as these allocatons seem to be club wide in nature, and with the spends within Canada, our restricted funds may be more appropriate.

I invite everyone to please join us for our first 2 in person meetins of the year, to be held at the Wharf & Feather restaurant at The Holiday Inn. I invite apporpriate club communications persons to publish these meetings online and in club updates, and encourage others from our club to join.

We will build an agenda in September and October to review programmes with funding commitments, and we will discuss the possibility of a holiday appeal, similar to Greta's Blanket Drive last year. We have allocated $1,000 from our fund to support this again. Finally, our next two meetings we will have an opportunity to discuss our "direction" and "focus" as a committee, be it geographic, tech innovation, mentorship, gender focused, etc... i have listed some of my own perspectives on this in the attached report and encourage everyone to bring their ideas to our next meetings. I have also provided the listings for our own meetings and our regional committee if you are inclined to participate in both;

Kingston Frontenac International Service Committee meetings:
  • Tuesday September 17th @ 5:30 PM @ Wharf & Feather Restaurant at Holiday Inn for dinner / meeting.
  • Tuesday October 15h @ 5:30 PM @ Wharf & Feather Restaurant at Holiday Inn for dinner / meeting.

JPIC / Regional International Services Support Committee meetings:
  • JPIC / Regional Committee meeting Tuesday September 24th @ 5:30 PM @ Wharf & Feather Boardroom for dinner / meeting.
  • JPIC / Regional Committee meeting Tuesday November 19th @ 5:30 PM @ Wharf & Feather Boardroom for dinner / meeting.

-----------------------------------------

Thanks for your support and involvement in this important Rotary Committee. Please reach out and let me know if there are key points missing or to be added for our agenda in September.

Be well,

Douglas Tanton

Polio News September 15, 2024

One new Wild Polio case reported this week.  We are now 3 weeks since the Onset of Paralysis of the most recent reported Wild Polio Case in Pakistan.

The Gaza Humanitarian Pause campaign which started in central Gaza with a three-day pause in fighting, and then moved to southern Gaza for another three-day pause, followed by northern Gaza, was completed yesterday. 195,747 children were immunized in central Gaza, 250,694 in southern Gaza, and 106,110 in northern Gaza for a total of 552,451 children vaccinated.  Communities were enthusiastic about the vaccination efforts, with a large number of families bringing children to the 117 fixed sites to receive nOPV2. There are plans for a second round of immunizations in about four weeks.
No cVDPV2 cases were reported in Gaza this week.  There has been one case from Gaza reported this year.
Novel Oral Polio Vaccine Type 2 - In a significant step towards a polio-free world, India-based vaccine manufacturer Biological E received World Health Organization Pre-qualification for their novel oral polio vaccine, nOPV2.
Joining Bio Farma as the second supplier of this next-generation vaccine, Biological E will help ensure there is a consistent supply of nOPV2, playing a critical role in stopping outbreaks and protecting millions of children from the devastating effects of variant type 2 poliovirus.

End Polio Now - Countdown to History

In 1985, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program to protect children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio.

Since that time, Rotary's efforts and those of partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world, have achieved a 99% reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide.

Rotarians stand at the brink of a great victory and look forward to celebrating the global eradication of polio.

A Taste of Italy's Finest

Bobbi Pecorino’s Italian Wine Bar brings the experience of a traditional Italian wine bar to Kingston. Found in every Italian city and small town alike, our emphasis and commitment is to offer high-quality wines reflecting the wonderful diversity of the wine world. There is a large revolving selection of wines by the glass as well as a larger list by the bottle, allowing you to enjoy something familiar or experiment with a wine you haven’t tried. All wines are sourced from families that we consider friends and great stewards of the land, wines that are sustainable, organic, or biodynamically farmed. All the wines served in the wine bar will also be available for purchase from our extensive retail bottle shop.

In Italy, one never has a glass of wine without a bite of food. We will continue this tradition by offering small plates of cicchetti and antipasto-styled authentic tastes found in Italy. So join us, make new friends, and discover a little taste of Italy in the heart of Kingston’s historic downtown.

Lights On The Lake - An Easter Seals Fundraiser
Nov. 09, 2024 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

On behalf of Easter Seals Ontario, you are cordially invited to the 2nd Annual Lights On The Lake, taking place on Saturday November 9th, 2024 at the beautifully restored Great Lakes Museum.

Join us as we celebrate all the successes over the last year, and we celebrate the 100 plus years that Easter Seals has been Helping Kids and youth living with physical disabilities succeed. Come meet some of the families you help when you support our local events, learn more about our services and meet some of our camp counsellors who make a difference in kids' lives.

The event will feature Vickie Keith as our inspirational guest speaker, enjoy some live entertainment from Left On Middle Road all while enjoying a drink and some delicious canapes and appetizers from our friends at Ottercreek Farms.

You will also have the opportunity to take home one of our feature trees or wreaths that are decorated with donated gifts and decorations made especially for you with love from our local Easter Seals Kids!

The S.S. Keewatin exhibit tells the story of the Keewatin, from her construction in Glasgow in 1907 to her arrival in Kingston in 2023, as she fits within the greater picture of Canadian maritime and transportation history.  Using historic photographs, testimony from real people who sailed on the vessel (including passengers and employees) and artefacts drawn from her long operational history, the S.S. Keewatin exhibit provides context for her construction, operation and retirement.

You can purchase tickets directly through our event page, you can call me directly with a credit card or send an e-Transfer to this email and I will provide you with your ticket.

I would love for you to spread the word, invite a friend, bring your family, bring a date!  Your presence will help us continue our mission in Helping Kids Succeed. We look forward to having you with us and thank you for your continued support.

We will be looking at the requests for funding and (briefly) discussing if the new format of the online applications suits our club's needs.Don Taylor and I had a meeting at the Sugar Shack on Wednesday.  Here's a brief summary of what was discussed.

1 -- Elsabe heard back from the Cataraqui Conservation Authority.  The boardwalk will NOT be rebuilt, but there are other financial needs we could help with.
2 -- If we DO take on a large project, Don suggested payments in installments, ie: four installments of $5K for a $20K project.
3 -- We are still waiting to hear back from Lionhearts about which Wednesday will work best for food packing.  Kelly at Lionhearts is keen to have us, but will not know until November which week is best.   (Lionhearts has been informed that grants are available for bigger requests.)
4 -- A couple of the volunteer opportunities were touched on, including "Roots of Empathy" (brought forward by Elsabe at a previous meeting) and "Brushamania", a dental hygiene project being run by the Cataraqui-Kingston club.
5 -- I have reached out to the Community Service chairs at all the local clubs and have heard back from 2.  I will wait another week, then will arrange a Zoom meeting with those interested in coordinating our activities to maximize impact.
6 -- I will reach out to Anne Desgagnes about advertising the grant application on Facebook.
7 -- I will email Elizabeth Bailey from Kingston 4 Paws about our new grant application system.

Let's plan on having a Community Services meeting on Nov 27th at 5pm, prior to the club assembly.  Unfortunately, none of the other Wednesdays between now and then will work, but if anyone has a pressing need to meet prior to that, please let me know.

International Service Committee Meeting
Dec. 03, 2024 5:30 p.m.

We will build an agenda in September and October to review programmes with funding commitments, and we will discuss the possibility of a holiday appeal, similar to Greta's Blanket Drive last year. We have allocated $1,000 from our fund to support this again. Finally, our next two meetings we will have an opportunity to discuss our "direction" and "focus" as a committee, be it geographic, tech innovation, mentorship, gender focused, etc... i have listed some of my own perspectives on this in the attached report and encourage everyone to bring their ideas to our next meetings. I have also provided the listings for our own meetings and our regional committee if you are inclined to participate in both;

Pippin features an acrobatic troupe of performers, led by the charismatic Leading Player. The ensemble cast tells the story of Pippin, a young prince who longs to find passion and adventure in his life. To prove his loyalty to his distracted father, King Charles, Pippin goes to war. But when the Leading Player convinces the prince to fight tyranny, Pippin kills Charles and takes over the throne. Realizing his mistake, Pippin begs the Leading Player to bring his father back to life, and she obliges. The prince falls in love with Catherine, a widow with a young son, and (much to the Leading Player’s chagrin), Pippin struggles to decide whether he should settle down and pursue a peaceful life or continue to make magic with the dazzling troupe of performers.

Whether you think of Whiskey as delicious, evil or awful, the story of whiskey is fascinating, especially when told by our new member Sylvain Bouffard.  Be prepared to be entertained. He is a whisky enthusiast and aficionado. He enjoys conducting whisky tastings and sharing his passion on many topics related to whisky making. Sylvain organised The Spirits of Kingston Whisky Festival for three consecutive years, as a fundraising event for the Museum of Communications & Electronics on the Base. The Festivals would typically be conducted over several days,  attracting over one thousand whisky fans each year.

BOARD MEETING MINUTES
December 18, 2024

Attending: Arja, Trevor, John M., M-C,
Jennifer, Don P., Randy, Fred

Minutes of November 6: motion to accept by Randy, seconded by M-C; unanimous

President (Arja):
 Cash calendar sales wrapping up,
 Reserving discussion on club Code of Conduct until January meeting
 Update on District Action Plan.

President-elect (Trevor):
 Reviewing District Strategic Plan within perspective of our club’s size and current commitments.

Treasurer (John):
 Tabled 2023-2024 Financial Statement,
 Presented YTD report and projected bingo funding within committee budget flows.

Past President (Peter):
 For 2025-2026 slate of officers, current Directors to continue for second year of their two year term.  Don P. to continue.
 President will, of course, be Trevor (now President-elect), John M to continue as Treasurer and Fred as Secretary (with the view to training a replacement).
 Position of President-nominee remains open.

International (Douglas) submitted by email:
 Meghan Jenkins joined us by Zoom from British Columbia (unexpectedly), where she was on-call in a maternity ward. She updated members present on the “wish list” for Mae Tao Clinic and answered questions regarding the 5 items (C$33,900). It’s important to recognize each of the items addresses separate needs.
 Provided he can get a tax receipt, John Cowan committed to support the first 2 items - the electronic fetal monitor and the transfusion machine (C$6,400). Meghan got a call to attend a patient before we discussed her photo exhibition/ other fundraising ideas to meet her MTC goal. She would welcome the opportunity to attend a future JPIC meeting.
 Again, the subject of needing to review the Erle Allan Trust Declaration document was raised.  A copy of the document was provided to committee members and reviewed by John Cowan, satisfactorily addressing previous concerns about tax deductibility of donations and the potential to use funds for international projects.
 After her departure, Don updated the committee on Meghan’s next venture to Rwanda in April 2025. Trevor suggested she be connected with John Gale (C-K Club), who has extensive Rotary contacts there. The committee expressed its overall support for her initiatives and the potential to positively impact international communities.
 Greta updated the committee regarding club member donations to ShelterBox. The information requested (non-specific by Club) is available and can be provided.  Greta will be away visiting family in Australia from early January thru April.

Meeting adjourned… moved by Randy, seconded by M-C; unanimous.

Rooted in Action: Empowering Youth to Build a Sustainable Future

Join us for the 2025 Kingston Climate Change Symposium, presented by the City of Kingston and Sustainable Kingston, and get ready to be inspired by our remarkable lineup of speakers.

Our keynote address will be delivered by Autumn Peltier, an Indigenous Rights & Water activist whose journey for justice has made waves around the globe. Ali Hassan, the dynamic and engaging host of CBC's Laugh out Loud and moderator of Canada Reads, will once again return as our event host. The full speaker lineup, including panelists, is to be determined.

Under the theme "Rooted in Action: Empowering Youth to Build a Sustainable Future," the 2025 Symposium is set to be an inspiring event highlighting youth-led climate action, bringing together passionate young leaders, environmental advocates, educators and community members for engaging dialogue on climate solutions driven by youth.

During breaks and after the symposium, you'll also have the chance to connect with local environmental groups and city leaders at our small exhibit located at Kingston Grand Theatre.

This signature event is all about sparking action, showcasing the latest progress in community-driven climate projects, enhancing our local community connections and nurturing new ones.

We will be considering additional funding requests for and discussing potential legacy projects. Taylor and I had a meeting at the Sugar Shack on Wednesday.

Hello members of Kingston Frontenac Rotary leadership and Committee members of the Kingston Frontenac International Service Committee,

This is Douglas Tanton reporting on a an immediate funding / donation receipt issue and wanting to get this straightened immediately, today.

We have a member of our Kingston Frontenac Rotary club who would like to make a sizeable donation (+ $5,000 CDN) in support of Meghan Jenkins work at the Mao Tai Clinic in Thailand. The donation could be forwarded and distributed via the Thailand Rotary Club connection (Gerry Nelson) as this partnership had been developed by Don Polk.

The prospective donor, John Cowan, requires a firm confirmation that his donation cheque may be delivered to Erle Allen Trust, and accepted and deposited by this Trust before the end of February so that John will be able to receive a donation tax receipt. That's the first step I believe.

We would then invite Meghan / Don Polk to write / approach the Trust in early March and make a request for funds to be applied overseas to the basket of projects Meghan has been promoting and Don Polk has described, via the Thailand Rotary Club and Gerry Nelson contacts Meghan and Don Polk have connected with.

This is the best I can come up with, I am not an expert of the Trust, and I would immediately request that John Mirski connect with John Cowan (today) to confirm this or decline this donation.

Once this is confirmed I will be available to support this.

Secondly, as this is the only pressing issue for our International Service Committee to deal with this month, I recommend we do not meet tomorrow evening as planned. Instead, I welcome this get resolved asap and please let me know if I need to report anything else to the club. No need for a meeting tomorrow eveningand I will update our committee.

Best wishes,

Douglas Tanton

Hello members of the Kingston Frontenac International Committee, and other interested Club / Rotary individuals.

Please note that the next meeting of the International Committee of Kingston Frontenac Rotary Club will be held on Tuesday February 4th.
The meeting will start at 5:30 PMand will be held, as usual, at The Wharf and Feather restaurant at the Holiday Inn in Kingston.

This is a change from the earlier published date of Tuesday January 28th. Please note there will be some important updates for this next meeting.

1. We will be discussing and processing a club member donation via Erle Allen Trust during February with donation tax receipt.
We will be inviting John Mirski as Club Treasurer to join us for this meeting, and to comment and support our Committee as we now have an active member of our committee wanting to immediately donate funds through the Erle Allen Trust in order to generate a 2024 applicable Tax Receipt. This member is wanting to use this donation as a way to 3rd party extend support to the Mai Tao Clinic in Thailand, supporting the work of Meghan Jenkins.

2. Girls Menstrual Hygiene Kits / Holiday appeal project.
Continuing in February we will be supporting processing donations with 2024 tax receipts, through a 3rd party local Rotary Club Foundation, for Victoria Pearson's promoted menstrual hygiene kits. More details to follow.

3. Greta has brought forward a request for participation in a joint Toilet project at Early Development school in Diepsloot, Johannesburg
by RC Morningside and RC Johannesburg New Dawn. (This project is here attached). Diepsloot is an informal settlement near Johannesburg where RC Morningside has been over ten years involved in the upgrading of daily life.

4. Peter Morrin update from his travels / project support from the committee.
it is also my hope that we will be joined by Peter Morrin and he will update our committee on his travels / program outcomes.

-----------
Please advise me via email if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday February 4th @ 5:30 PM at The Wharf and Feather.

We will be considering additional funding requests for and discussing potential legacy projects.
Also reviewing details for upcoming Pancake Tuesday Fundraiser for Easter Seals on March 4.Taylor and I had a meeting at the Sugar Shack on Wednesday.

A View of the Multiverse from the Top Down to the Bottom Up

Mar. 19, 2025

* - Food Bank Collection

Topic:  A VIew of the Multiverse from the Top Down to the Bottom Up
Speaker:  Dr. Joe Bramante

Dr. Joe Bramante is an Associate Professor at Queen’s University.  After completing his PhD at the University of Hawaii, Joe held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Notre Dame and the Perimeter Institute, where he focused on the theory and phenomenology of dark matter and the early universe. His main research objective is to construct well-motivated theories that describe fundamental physics and to find new and hopefully elegant ways for humans to test those theories.

Currently most of Joe’s time is spent on identifying extensions of our standard understanding of nature, that experimental physicists and astronomers can then search for. Right now, he is in the process of demonstrating how detectors already operating at SNOLAB can be used to search for a new type of dark matter particle: multiply interacting massive particles (MIMPs).

2) Cataraqui Conservation Authority:  Elsabe will reach out to them again to determine if there are any projects our club can support.

Meeting adjourned at 6:10 pm.

Next Meeting:  Wednesday, March 19th at 5:15

Where Fact Meets Fiction

Apr. 02, 2025 6:15 p.m.

Learn how fictitious characters are woven into real events to create an engaging narrative. Sarah, a servant orphaned by cholera in London in 1869 desperately seeks her family. Richard, the disgraced son of an eastern Ontario sawmill owner must redeem himself, then seek his own path. Their journeys are brought together by a group of Home Children.

Bio. Laurie Ness Gordon, author of Finding Home and The Medal, has worked as an educator, workshop presenter and volunteer Project Manager for a touring art exhibition. She currently supports refugees from Syria and Somalia. She enjoys making music, travelling, swimming, shoveling snow and being ‘productive’. Her favourite holiday memory is a 5-week motorcycle trip across Canada.

Partners in Mission Food Bank FOOD BLITZ
Apr. 12, 2025 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Hello Everyone!

Please share with your Members and Friends for Rotary.

The annual Partners in Mission Food Bank Food Blitz is happening this Saturday April 12 at 10 grocery stores across the city. The goal is to collect 25,000 lbs of food and $30,000. Volunteer groups will be collecting donations as our community does their regular grocery shopping from 9am to 4pm.

The Kingston Waterfront Rotary Club will be collecting donations at the Andrew & Emily No Frills at 1030 Coverdale Dr. We have been volunteering  with this event for over 15 years - even before we Charterd 10 years ago.  If you would like to join us, please email Gabrielle Whan at gabrielle.whan@gmail.com.  We are still looking for support in the afternoon from 1:00 - 4:00pm.  This is a great family event and everyone is welcome!  We can also sign Volunteer hours for High Schoolers!

If you can't spare a few hours on Saturday, please stop by your local grocery store to make a food donation or online at www.kingstonfoodbank.ca

Thank you
Gabrielle
