President's Message

Dear Friends -

Yesterday we received notice that Smitty's is closing on very short notice.  Their last day of operations will be May 19 and we will be moving our things from there tomorrow (May 15) so that we are not in their way.  The owners, Randy and Basilia, have decided to sell their store and we understand that the space will be converted to another use.  We wish them and their staff all the best for the future and we will miss their warm welcome.

Don Taylor and MC are working on a new venue for our club meetings, but this will not be an easy task.  Venues are always a bit of a compromise, and we ask for everyone's understanding and flexibility.  We are proposing to maintain our current meeting schedule where the second and fourth Wednesday of the month will be a traditional dinner meeting at 6:15 PM.  This may need to be adjusted, but we will wait to see what comes back from Don and MC.

We have an immediate need for short-term storage of our two cabinets, television, lectern, and minor signage.  We will need this for tomorrow.  If anyone has some space we can use in the short term please let me know directly.

Our schedule for the next several weeks is as follows:
  • May 15: International Night at the Gananaque Club with Hari presenting.  Food packing cancelled.
  • May 22: Joint 2024-25 Board Meeting at 5:00 with the location TBD.  Regular meeting cancelled.
  • May 29: CLUB ASSEMBLY - to discuss challenges and opportunities for the new Rotary year.  Regular time (6:15 start) and location TBD.
    • PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND as we need everyone's input to build a vibrant, relevant club.
      • Topics of discussion will include Venue (if not decided), Membership, Fund Raising, others.
  • June 5: Celebration BBQ at Peter's at 5:30.  85 Livingston Avenue.  Members & Spouses invited
    • Burgers (Bearance's Beef, Peter's seasoned Turkey, and Austin's Vegan specialty).
    • Pot luck for other dishes with sign-up sheets to be sent out.  BYOB.
We will update the schedule on our website and the Club-Runner app as locations are confirmed.

This is one more challenge for our club, but also "An opportunity to Excel".

Peter

Seeking Host Families

The Rotary Clubs in the Kingston area are requesting your assistance to host a high-school aged exchange student from another country for a three to four month period. This is an ongoing requirement, every year

The Rotary Youth Exchange Scholarship is a year-round program in which our Club participates. In exchange for sending out one high school student to another country for a year, we agree to receive a student from an international destination who will also remain in our community for one year.

There is no monetary remuneration for hosting a student.  The benefits to you and your family are numerous. You will learn about another culture directly from someone who lives there. You will have the satisfaction of showing a visitor the way a Canadian family lives, of showing them your community and your country's way of life. You may learn to speak another language as you assist this young person to learn to speak English. You will make a life-long friend in another country of the world.

If you would like to apply to be a host family, please apply through the online Host Family Application form on our Rotary District 7040 Youth Exchange website at www.district7040ye.com (found under “Forms and Documents” and under “For Parents/Host Families”) or  https://yehub.net/C04-hfapp.

If you would like more information about this very rewarding experience, please contact us.
