VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! - Youth Symposium
May 29, 2025 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The planning committee is still working through logistics, but we have a bit of a plan for Rotary volunteers:

  • The process to approve volunteer drivers is a bit overwhelming so as much as we would welcome Rotary volunteer drivers, this might not happen.
  • We have 6 pick up locations in which we are hoping to have Rotary volunteers presents to support the youth while they wait for rides
    • 6 volunteers between the hours of 9am and 10am.
  • We would love to have 3 volunteers to support the registration table
    • Pm 3 volunteers from 9:30am to 10:30am at Rideau Acres
  • We need two volunteers to support IT
    • 2 volunteers between 9am and 2pm to support the set up of computers, screens, mics…
  • We can use the 3 volunteers helping with the registration and perhaps 2 more for set up
    • 5 volunteers between 9am and 10am to help with setting up tables, chairs and support with booth display set ups.
  • We can use up to 5 volunteers to help with lunch and clean up.
    • We can use the existing volunteers from the registration/set up/IT crew to help with lunch and clean up
  • We can use 5 volunteers to help with overall clean up and tear down
    • Again, these volunteers could be the existing volunteers who are already there if they can stick around

Overall, it would be great if the adults can engage with the youth during the event, be present and available to support with crowd control and directing the youth as to where they need to be. I would suggest between 15-20 volunteers.

All Rotary volunteers will need:

  • to complete the registration form which is a QR code embedded in the attached flyer
  • to have a recent CPIC completed

More detail will be forthcoming once we start getting folks register.

Murphy’s Law: “If anything can go wrong it will.”      O’Toole’s Refinement: “Murphy was an optimist.”

Tomorrow is Warren Winter’s birthday. The big Seven O. But he’s not happy about it. In fact, he’s not happy about much of anything. When he left his marriage his wife told him he’d end up old, bitter and alone. And now, as he says: “Old. Check. Bitter. Check. Alone. You betcha.” He’s just lost his job – a newspaper column he’s had for 30 years – being told he’s old-fashioned and irrelevant with nothing to say to today’s audience. He contacts his ex-wife with the faint hope of getting back together, only to learn that she’s taken up with his best friend. He announces a birthday party for himself – and no one shows up. On top of this, he suffers from polymyalgia – pain in every nook and cranny - and every part of his body seems to be giving out at once, causing him grief from hemorrhoids to heart. “But,“ he says, “I’ll deal with my decrepitude the old-fashioned way. I’ll ignore it.” Indeed, the only thing he hasn’t lost is his dark sense of humour as he wryly confronts one indignity after another as they befall him in waves. He says his life is a perfect example of Sturgeon’s Law – “Ninety percent of everything is crap.”

They say comedy is tragedy plus time – but Warren knows he may not have a whole lot of time left. His glass is long past half empty, but there’s still Sturgeon’s last 10%. And is there still a glimmer of hope to be found in those last few drops …?

Hope Air

Aug. 20, 2025

* - Food Bank Collection

Hope Air is the only national charity filling a massive healthcare system gap. While we have universal healthcare, we don’t have universal access to that healthcare. The medical treatments start when you show up at the clinic or the hospital. Hope Air provides free flights, accommodation, and meal vouchers for Canadians in need who require medical treatments far from home. Over half of Hope Air patients would either have to borrow money, delay, or simply cancel their life-giving medical treatments. Please feel free to contact me anytime you would like more information on the charity. Meanwhile, their website is HopeAir.ca
