President's Message

Dear Friends -

We had a Board meeting last Wednesday although our regular meeting was cancelled due to the closure of Smitty’s.  The following are the key issues for the Club at this time:

Membership Annual Dues:
It was decided to increase dues to $250 per year (from $235).  This was precipitated by a rise of $10 per person in our District dues.
  • Please pay dues by June 17, 2024 to confirm membership for next year.
  • Preferred payment is by E-transfer (frontenacrc@gmail.com).
  • Alternatively, payment by cheque payable to:
    Rotary Club of Kingston-Frontenac
    c/o John Evans
    65 Michael Grass Cresc,
    Kingston, ON
    K7M 2W2

Incoming International Exchange Students:
Our long-term International Exchange student will be Fernanda Machado from Brazil.  She will arrive in August 2024 and stay with 3 host families during her stay.  Don Polk is actively seeking host families to welcome Fernanda for 3-4 months each.  She will likely be attending Holy Cross school (Woodbine Rd. west of Bayridge Dr.).  Transportation to and from school is the Host family’s responsibility, but there are both school bus and public transportation opportunities.  Please consider acting as a Host family or seeking out other families who might be appropriate and enjoy this experience.  There is a significant vetting process, so please consider this immediately.

• In addition to the Host families, we need members to host our student for fun outings on weekends or after school.  This could be a movie, sports event, sports activity, hike, sharing a hobby, day trip or any other fun and enriching event.  Participating members need to have completed the Rotary Youth Protection training and a Police Background Check (Vulnerable Sector).  At the present time, only a few members have completed both components.  Please complete these as soon as possible so that you can participate in this worthwhile program.  If you have any questions, contact Don Polk.
• In addition to our long-term student, we will be hosting two short term students for 1-2 months each.  The first student will arrive in July or August and the second student (also from Brazil) in mid-December.  Host families for these students are confirmed, but we will be looking for members to host them for day trips or outings on the weekend to enrich their experience.  Participation in this program requires the same completion of the Rotary Youth Protection training program and Police background check (Vulnerable Sector).

Theatre Night Returns:

Next year, in 2025, we welcome back Theatre night for a performance of Decrepitude Blues, a comedy/ drama by acclaimed local screenwriter and playwright Douglas Bowie on Wednesday evening June 18, 2025.

  • Susan Freitas and Douglas Tanton will be leading this initiative and will require the full assistance of all members.
  • Our work will start this fall to make sure we have a stellar event next June!

A New Home:

• Don Taylor and MC are busy looking at new options for our sit-down dinner meetings.  On an interim basis, Don has booked Bistro Stefan (ordering from the Tom’s Place menu) at the Best Western Fireside Inn on Princess St. for May 29, June 12, June 26, and July 10.  Suggestions for any other veunue(s) to be considered should be forwarded to Don or MC.

Club Assembly May 29, 2024:

• This will be our first Club Assembly in some time.  We hope all members will contribute their comments to one the four areas of discussion:
  • Membership (Randy Beck
  • Fundraising (Fred Richmond)
  • Strategic Vision and a new Home (Trevor Dagilis)
  • Participation, Enthusiasm, Engagement (Arja Hamalainen)
Each topic will be discussed in a smaller group, chaired by the individuals noted.  If you cannot make the meeting, or would like to share your thoughts on any of these topics, please direct your comments to each of the chairs.  If you have a particular group you would like to join, please let me (Peter) know.  Otherwise, we will divide people up.

Finally, I would like to recognize the following members who have recently celebrated Rotary service anniversaries:
  • Don Taylor - 34 years (Apr 5)
  • Susan Freitas - 10 years (Apr 23)
Congratulations and many thanks for your many contributions in the communities served by Rotary and the Kingston-Frontenac club!

Peter

Kingston-Frontenac Foundation Update

As of the end of April 2024, we are doing well as a club: We have 9 members who have donated to the Rotary Foundation this Rotary year, and 8 signed up for Rotary Direct (the automatic billing option).

Our Annual Fund donations are only at 64% of last year’s amount. Please remember that our Rotary International goal is “Every Rotarian Every Year” to donate a minimum of $25 USD to the Rotary Foundation.

You can call into The Rotary Support Centre and make a payment over the phone with your credit card. Call 1-866-976-8279 to make your donation. Make your cheque payable to The Rotary Foundation (Canada) and send it with a completed recognition/contribution form. Click here for a copy of the form. Please let me know if you would like assistance in setting up an electronic donation, or sending a cheque!

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is making great progress in our efforts to eliminate Polio. There were only 12 cases of wild polio virus in 2023 (6 in Pakistan, and 6 in Afghanistan).

Our club Polio Plus contribution is far less than past years. To encourage donations to Polio Plus, Trevor and Anne are creating a challenge for club members. By June 15 they will donate up to $250 CDN to match new Polio Plus donations by current club members. Please email Trevor at trevor.rotary@gmail.com to notify him of your committed donation to TRF’s Polio Plus fund!

Only 1 month remains in the Rotary year!

Seeking Host Families

The Rotary Clubs in the Kingston area are requesting your assistance to host a high-school aged exchange student from another country for a three to four month period. This is an ongoing requirement, every year

The Rotary Youth Exchange Scholarship is a year-round program in which our Club participates. In exchange for sending out one high school student to another country for a year, we agree to receive a student from an international destination who will also remain in our community for one year.

There is no monetary remuneration for hosting a student.  The benefits to you and your family are numerous. You will learn about another culture directly from someone who lives there. You will have the satisfaction of showing a visitor the way a Canadian family lives, of showing them your community and your country's way of life. You may learn to speak another language as you assist this young person to learn to speak English. You will make a life-long friend in another country of the world.

If you would like to apply to be a host family, please apply through the online Host Family Application form on our Rotary District 7040 Youth Exchange website at www.district7040ye.com (found under “Forms and Documents” and under “For Parents/Host Families”) or  https://yehub.net/C04-hfapp.

If you would like more information about this very rewarding experience, please contact us.
