President’s Message

Hello, everyone!

August was an eventful month for our club. As you are probably all aware, the membership has chosen a new venue for our meetings: Bistro Stefan, at the Best Western Hotel. Our in-person meeting format will be as follows:
Second Wednesday of the month: Board meeting at 5:00 pm, followed by Club meeting at 6:15 pm
Fourth Wednesday of the month: Club meeting at 6:15 pm
The first Wednesday will continue to be our Pub Night, and the third Wednesday our Community Volunteering evening.
Many thanks to MC and Don Taylor for sourcing many potential venues for us. It's good to have us "settled".

On August 21st, we hosted a visit by our District Governor, Teresa Whitmore. Most of the club members who attended were invited to speak to their various projects. Teresa was presented with a slide show highlighting the many aspects of our club endeavours, beginning with Homes for Heroes, with Dr. John Cowan speaking. She was also informed of the administrative tasks that our club has completed.
A summary of Teresa's speech, submitted by Elsabé, is included in this bulletin. RI's "Action Plan", outlined for clubs to follow, is also attached.
Dr. Cowan presented Teresa an autographed copy of his latest book, " The Opinionated Middle Ground", by way of thanks for her inspirational speech.

In conclusion, I would like to acknowledge and thank all of the members who have volunteered for the Fall Fair. We had an outstanding response, with nine shifts covered! Also, an initial consignment of 100 Cash Calendars have arrived. I will be distributing these to members at the September 11th meeting.

Best wishes for a pleasant September.

DG TERESA WHITMORE VISIT
August 21, 2024
- Elsabé Falkson
AG Seaway West

Summary:

DG Teresa Whitmore visited our club at the River Mill  Restaurant on August  21.   The Rotaract Club joined us.  The gist of her message to us is to follow the four goals set by RI International President Stephanie Urchick, and adopted by District 7040.  She challenged us to do the following:

  1. Increase our Impact by uniting to eradicate Polio. She asked our club to create an event on World Polio Day  (October 24) to raise awareness and $1500 per club!
  2. Rotarians stand for Peace.  She asked us to erect a Peace Pole.  ( we will do that in cooperation with other clubs)
  3. She asked us (Rotarians) to consider adding a codicil to our Wills to support Rotary's Endowment goals.  She asked every Rotarian to make direct TRF  monthly contributions of  US$ 10.  It is easy!; Sign in to My Rotary, and click on "Donate".   You can choose to support featured causes or an area of focus. or even a specific Global Grant. You decide where your money is spent!  Imagine if 1.6 million Rotarians each donate at least $10 every month!
  4. We have to grow our membership: Recruit new members and engage our current members with meaningful club experiences.
  5. Learning and Development:  She encouraged Rotarians to enroll in bite-size online modules in the  RI  "Learning Centre " and to attend District Learning activities and experiences.  She enthusiastically described the fun awaiting us at the District Conference in Ottawa.

Afterwards, there was an exchange of flags and gifts.  John Cowan presented the SDG with his book " The Opinionated Middle Ground:  Consensus is Possible and Polarization is Curable"

The meal and service at the River Mill was great.

THE SEARCH IS OVER !
OUR NEW HOME: Bistro STEFAN

Following the unfortunate closure of Smitty’s earlier this year, and after an extensive review of many locations around Kingston, K-F Rotary Club members voted and have chosen a new home: Bistro STEFAN in the Best Western Fireside Inn.

Meeting many of the criteria desired in a new host location, Bistro STEFAN offers K-F members a comfortable room for meetings with flexibility for expansion, a varied menu, a central location with ample parking, as well as being an attractive space to host invited speakers & guests.

Regular Club meetings will be held in Bistro STEFAN on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of each month, starting immediately on September 11.

STILL Seeking
Host Families....
WE NEED YOU !

The Rotary Clubs in the Kingston area are requesting your assistance to host a high-school aged exchange student from another country for a three to four month period. This is an ongoing requirement, every year

The Rotary Youth Exchange Scholarship is a year-round program in which our Club participates. In exchange for sending out one high school student to another country for a year, we agree to receive a student from an international destination who will also remain in our community for one year.

There is no monetary remuneration for hosting a student.  The benefits to you and your family are numerous. You will learn about another culture directly from someone who lives there. You will have the satisfaction of showing a visitor the way a Canadian family lives, of showing them your community and your country's way of life. You may learn to speak another language as you assist this young person to learn to speak English. You will make a life-long friend in another country of the world.

If you would like to apply to be a host family or know of someone who might, please apply through the online Host Family Application form on our Rotary District 7040 Youth Exchange website at www.district7040ye.com (found under “Forms and Documents” and under “For Parents/Host Families”) or  https://yehub.net/C04-hfapp.

If you would like more information about this very rewarding experience, please contact us.

September Pub Night
on Wolfe Island !

A lovely September evening for a crossing to the Island on the sleek new Wolfe Islander IV was the setting for the K-F September Pub Night - at the Wolfe Island Pub & Pizzeria.  Our group of 12 Rotarians, Rotaractors and guests enjoyed Island hospitality featuring great pizza at a (happily) very busy W.I.P.P. serving both locals and city-folk alike.

Thanks to M-C for arranging the pizza logistics, so that all were well-fed in lots of time to see a beautiful Island sunset on the walk back to the ferry home!
