ROTA - TELLER

October 15, 2024
Thanksgiving Edition

President’s Message

Hello, everyone!

Rotary has designated October as Economic and Community Development month.  In line with this theme, and to assure more impactful support for local community projects, your Club has launched a new online Community Projects Grants application process.  Details on applying for a grant can be found below and on our website.

October is also when Rotary raises awareness worldwide about Polio eradication by marking World Polio Day on October 24.  In addition to Trevor's presentation on Polio Plus on October 23, the Rotaract Club is having a Bottle Drive to raise funds for Polio Plus and on World Polio Day your Club will have a stall at Market Square with promotional materials for a "Purple Pinkie" event, to raise awareness and solicit funds for Polio Plus.  Thank you to all who have signed up to help with these initiatives.

Club Notes:
  • The board meeting on October 9th focused on discussions of developing a process for accepting new members to the club. Trevor has volunteered to move this forward. As well, the concept of a "Code of Conduct" was introduced, the thought being to forestall conflict between club members that might lead to a loss of membership and potentially discourage new members from joining.  More information will be forthcoming regarding the outcome of these discussions.
  • All members should be aware that our club schedule has been updated through the end of the year to incorporate a number of highlights:  The November Board meeting and Student night (featuring the students your Club has sponsored for recent youth Adventures) will be held on November 6, enabling members to join other Rotarians in Seaway West on November 13 to attend Dinner with Rotary International Past President Jennifer Jones at the River Mill.
  • As well, I draw your attention to the Club outing on December 4 to partner-school Holy Cross' musical production of "Pippin" (tickets will be going on sale very soon) and the upcoming Club Christmas event on December 11.
  • Please check the Calendar on the website for dates & details, including the updated schedule for 2025.  In January, we will again begin monthly Food Packing nights (January 29), and a new monthly rotation beginning in February, and following, Board meetings will be held on the first Wednesday, Pub Nights on the second Wednesday, Club meetings the third Wednesday, and Food Packing on the fourth.
I hope that you have all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving! See you for Purple Pinkie Night on the 23rd.

CARABINER AWARD

Our club functions and thrives with unique contributions of our members. While we all contribute in our own special ways, there are some examples of members going above and beyond the norm.

The new Rotary Club of Kingston-Frontenac Carabiner Award has been created to celebrate and recognize individual members for unique and outstanding contributions to our club and our community service work.

Why a carabiner? The carabiner is traditionally used by climbers to attach ropes - vital for safely achieving challenging goals. The carabiner therefore is presented in recognition of someone doing something very useful, making connections, and allowing them and others to do important things.

It is in that spirit that I present the inaugural carabiner award to both Marie-Claude van der Merwe and Don Taylor.  Since the closure of Smitty’s they have been working relentlessly to help find our club a new home for our regular meetings. They checked out dozens of recommended sites, and arranged for us to test several of them so we could make an informed decision as a club.

Thank you MC and Don!

If you have a suggestion for a future recipient of the Rotary Club of Kingston-Frontenac Carabiner Award, please contact trevor at trevor.rotary@gmail.com

The Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus
- Peter Morrin
Rotary’s Foundations supports various larger initiatives. In advance of World Polio Day on October 24, I want to highlight Rotary’s long-running project to eradicate polio; End Polio Now. This project was started in 1979 and has reduced wild polio cases by 99.9%. The project works with other partners including the Gates Foundation who will match Rotary contributions 2:1.

The two countries where wild polio is still endemic are Afghanistan and Pakistan, but continued vaccination initiatives are working to rapidly reduce live polio cases.

Another type of Polio; Circulating Vaccine-Derive Poliovirus (cVDPV), has recently made the news in Gaza. One child has developed paralysis in one of his legs, the first case in 25 years. As with the eradication of wild polio virus, the solution to this outbreak is again vaccination. One round of vaccinations was completed September 1, with 559,161 children vaccinated. A second round is scheduled for October 14, to vaccinate an additional 591,700 children.

The Gaza case highlights the need for on-going vaccinations to eliminate wild polio and control CVDPV. This is why your continued contributions to Rotary’s Polio Plus fund are so important. Remember, your investment today saves not only suffering from polio, but lowers the final cost of this initiative.

K-F ROTARY NIGHTS @ THE COMMUNITY GARDEN
K-F members joined together with Rotaractors and other Rotarians at the Robinson Community Garden under the guidance of the Kingston Club's Darlene Clement to harvest vegetables, including potatoes, carrots, peppers, cabbage, onions, squash, tomatoes and corn.

Several types of veggies from the garden were recently judged "Best in Class" at this month's Kingston Fall Fair, including the Kennebec white potatoes (above).  More than 2,500 pounds of potatoes were harvested for donation to the South Frontenac Community Service, including the Grace Centre in Sydenham and others.

Thanks to all those who came out this season to lend a hand!

2024 Adventure in High Technology

The Rotary Club of Nepean-Kanata will offer the 40th annual Adventure in High Technology program from October 20-23, 2024.

This year AiHT will once again offer an in- person experience in Ottawa. Students will visit various businesses, each of whom will describe the unique and different ways that they use technology in their day-to-day work. Students will also either visit or hear presentations from a few educational institutions who will describe some of the training programs they offer in the high technology field.

The Kingston-Frontenac Club is sponsoring 3 students from Kingston-area high schools:

  • Jacob Fasken (Ernestown)
  • James Kirchner (Sydenham)
  • Katie Ward (Holy Cross)
Be sure to come hear them speak about their Adventure at Student Night on November 6.

STILL Seeking
Host Families....
WE NEED YOU !

The Rotary Clubs in the Kingston area are requesting your assistance to host a high-school aged exchange student from another country for a three to four month period. This is an ongoing requirement, every year

The Rotary Youth Exchange Scholarship is a year-round program in which our Club participates. In exchange for sending out one high school student to another country for a year, we agree to receive a student from an international destination who will also remain in our community for one year.

There is no monetary remuneration for hosting a student.  The benefits to you and your family are numerous:

  • You will learn about another culture directly from someone who lives there.
  • You will have the satisfaction of showing a visitor the way a Canadian family lives, of showing them your community and your country's way of life.
  • You may learn to speak another language as you assist this young person to learn to speak English.
  • You will make a life-long friend in another country of the world.

If you would like to apply to be a host family or know of someone who might, please apply through the online Host Family Application form on our Rotary District 7040 Youth Exchange website at www.district7040ye.com (found under “Forms and Documents” and under “For Parents/Host Families”) or  https://yehub.net/C04-hfapp.

If you would like more information about this very rewarding experience, please contact us.
