Rota-Teller
Leap  Year
Edition

February 29, 2024

President's Message

Dear Friends,

This Leap-Year edition of Rota-Teller features an update from Arja on the varied activities of the Community Service Committee, and also Trevor's mid-year (or a little past) overview on the Rotary Foundation and K-F's participation.

For those members interested in catching a Spring production at one of our partner high schools, Frontenac Secondary School will be presenting "Clue" on March 23, 26, 28.  On that same theme, enterprising and fun-loving club members can look forward to testing their sleuthing abilities at a K-F Murder-Mystery Fundraiser, to be held at Renaissance Supper Club on Saturday, April. 27 - so Save-The-Date!  Aggie and her team are finalizing the details, which should be forthcoming soon!

And finally, it's still not too late to book an appointment at Canadian Blood Services and join in the Leap Year Blood Drive.  Supplies at the blood bank continue to be a concern, especially locally, as demand is strong - so let's do our part and take along a friend or family-member to donate as well.

The Community Service Committee has identified Food Security as a strategic priority to guide K-F club support both financially and through volunteerism.  The Committee will soon be polling all K-F club members to suggest how to further strengthen alignment with club priorities, identify new areas for potential support and encourage a greater level of volunteer participation from members.

To date in 2023-24, the K-F club has approved funding requests to support and/ or dedicated volunteer hours to:
  • Martha's Table
  • Kids Against Hunger
  • Lionhearts Food Sharing
  • Extend-A-Family Kingston
  • Robinson Community Garden
  • Council on Aging
In addition, the club has approved funding requests from:
  • Easter Seals (Camps)
  • Joe's M.I.L.L. (Musical Instrument Lending Library)
  • Fairmount Home Music Therapy program
  • Living Solutions (Rotaractors)
In the Kingston-area, K-F members volunteer with other Rotarians on several community service / fundraising initiatives:
  • Canadian Blood Services blood drives (Lead)
  • No Mow May (Lead)
  • Rotary Park Spring clean-up
  • Little Forests tree planting
  • Go Nuts! Fall fundraiser
  • Kingston Fall Fair Ticket Booth fundraiser
  • City of Kingston Canada Day BBQ
Other Highlights
  • December visit to Extend-A-Family's hydroponic produce garden and assisting with product packaging
  • Musical presentation by Joe's M.I.L.L. with inspiring Christmas music and audience participation
  • October visit by District Governor, Dr. Pardeep Ahluwalia to K-F-Lionhearts Food Packing night at the Food Warehouse
  • 2023-24 Rotary District 7040 EnviroClub Bronze Award - petition submitted / award pending

Respectfully submitted,
Arja Hämäläinen

Rotary Foundation:
Advancing World Understanding, Goodwill and Peace

Thanks very much to the 9 K-F members who have donated this Rotary Year to The Rotary Foundation (TRF), as shown in the table below.

As a reminder, Rotary International’s goal for clubs is a minimum $100 USD donation to TRF per Rotarian. The “Every Rotarian Every Year” objective encourages every Rotarian to contribute at least $25 USD each year to TRF.

Although we're almost 2/3 of the way through the Rotary Year (July 1 to June 30), as of Feb 22 we are currently at only 52% of last year’s donations to the Annual Fund. Our average TRF donation amount is less than 45% of last year’s average.

Please consider how you can support our Foundation! If you would like any assistance in sending a cheque or setting up automatic donations, please let me know at trevor.rotary@gmail.com !
