Community Services Committee

Meeting Minutes – March 19, 2025

In Attendance:  Don Taylor, Russ Phin, Don Polk, Jennifer Patelli

Regrets:  Elsabe Falkson

1. Review of letter to community requesting information on funding needs in the city
Will be signed by Jennifer Patelli
Copy will be sent to Fred Richmond and John Mirski for feedback
Potential recipients could be suggested by Chamber of Commerce and could include City Mayor, President of SLC, President of Queen’s, CEO of KHSC, Social Service Agencies.
Letter should be on stationery with Rotary letterhead.  (Maybe Rotarians should also carry business cards…)
2. Fun Fair June 7th:  Confirmed participation of Joe’s MILL and Lake Effect Robotics.  Jennifer will determine if a face painter is already involved.  If not, she will try to book one.
We have several volunteers signed up already, but are still looking for a few people to “man the booth” from 1-3, and to help with set-up (9:30) and tear-down (3pm)
3. Science Fair March 20-21.  Don Polk, Catherine Demers and Elsabe Falkson will be judging.  Update hot off the press from Don:  Two clear winners were chosen by both Rotary Clubs in attendance.  A third project was found to be worthy of a prize, so a third prize of $150 will be arranged.
4. Hospice – See the Rota Teller for some lovely photos.  Our club’s support is noted on a wall plaque outside room #7.
5. Grant deadline to access Foundation money is the end of April.  Don Polk was in communication with Ronda Candy, Executive Director of Martha’s Table.  That organization is planning a renovation project to integrate the 2nd building (next door) they purchased.   Don has contacted Peter Morrin about the project, but there are some limitations on what the grant money can be used for.

Here is Peter’s response:

Dear Don and Jennifer,

I have gone through the requirements for a District Simplified Grant and see two possible snags:

1.  Major construction is not permitted, but renovations might be.  I would check first.

2.  The project must comply with one of Rotary's 7 areas of Focus.  Food security is not an area of focus at the present time.  I am not sure if this project could be massaged to fit under one of the other areas or not.  This would need to be examined before counting on the funds.

Remember that a DSG only gives a grant of $2500 USD to match with our club's contribution of $2500 USD.

The club as a whole has not been approached about this project yet.  Stay tuned!

Meeting adjourned at 6:10

Next Meeting:  Wednesday, April 16th at Bistro Stefan
